The Scent of Fresh Lemons is one of the musical's three inevitable gag songs. Unlike the other two, this song is a recurring gag which plays three times throughout the course of the musical. It is based on Grossberg's infamous catch-phrase "Ah, the days of my youth. Like the scent of fresh lemons, you see."

CAST:
Marvin Grossberg,
Phoenix Wright

ACT I

PHOENIX:

[spoken]
Mr. Grossberg, I’m glad you brought that up, actually. You see, your refusing to defend Mia’s younger sister leads me to believe that you know things that are very vital to this case. If you wouldn’t mind, can you tell me a little bit about your past?

GROSSBERG:

My... past?

[sung]
Like the scent of fresh lemons...
The days of my youuuuuth!

PHOENIX:

[spoken]
Stop! Objection! Stop! Please... please stop singing.

ACT III

PHOENIX: [spoken]
Robert Hammond... Since you last saw him, about how many years would you say have passed?

GROSSBERG: Did you say... “past”?

PHOENIX:What? Ah–no, no! Well, I mean, yes, technically but–

GROSSBERG:  [sung]
Like the scent of fresh lemons...
The days of my youuuuuuuuth!

[spoken]
Yes. Yes! Eureka! The pieces are all coming together now! Robert Hammond... he was the defense attorney in the DL-6 Incident.

ACT IV

GROSSBERG:  [spoken]
Oh. Don't you have any questions about my past?

PHOENIX:Your past?

GROSSBERG:Did you say... past!?

PHOENIX:Hey, what—wait! You said it—that’s cheating!!

GROSSBERG:[sung]
Like the scent of fresh lemons…
The days of my youuuuuuuuuuuth!!

[spoken]
Well, you’ve broken me, Wright. I’ll tell you anything you need to know.
